This paper analyzes the responses enacted by families of the Central Plateau in Burkina Faso during the year that followed a severe drought in 1997.We illustrate the agro-ecological and socio-economic contexts that shape livelihood options and constraints in an area characterized by high levels of climatic risk and low natural resource endowment.A description of farmers' perceptions and official accounts identifies key criteria whereby farmers formulate evaluations and predictions of a...

This study describes the nature of human capital development (HCD) in agriculture and rural development, and its implications on current programmes in the institutions of higher learning. This is in view of the fact that the majority of Africans are still trapped in an under performing rural and agricultural environment; and even emerging and developed economies on the continent still depend on agricultural performance to stimulate economic growth, food security and poverty alleviation. A...

This thesis is a study of the relationships between carbonate and Ca-amphibole in experimental petrology and natural systems. Amphibole and carbonate are important phases in upper mantle mineralogy, being their introduction related to metasomatic processes and products which influence magma petrogenesis. In the experimental system studied, at high pressure (10-22 kbar) and temperature (980-1400 °C), pargasitic amphibole is not stable in presence of Ca-carbonate but dehydrates to produce...

In 1995, South Africa commenced the implementation of a new quality assurance program at all educational levels, which promotes outcomes-based education. Degree programs and academic institutions have to be accredited by the South African Qualifications Authority through discipline-specific Education Training and Quality Assurance bodies. In response to these changes in education structure, the South African Pharmacy Council has developed outcomes-based competency standards for entry-level...

On April 25, 1998, a tailings dam of the Aznalcóllar pyrite mine partially collapsed and released to the Guadiamar river acidic water (pH < 3) and mud containing toxic metals (Fe, Zn, Pb, As, Cu, Sb, Co, Tl, Bi, Cd, Ag, Hg, Sr), threatening the Doñana National Park, a Spanish wildlife reserve. To assess possible biological effects in terrestrial ecosystems, biochemical biomarkers have been assayed for the first time in Algerian mice (Mus spretus), a non-protected and free-living species,...

I wanted to investigate how history is taught in the Ghanaian education systems at various levels and specifically in Cape Coast schools. I believe that history teaches people who they are and where they come from and thus equips them to learn from their past and prosper due to the analysis of the accomplishments and faults of their ancestors. I was curious to see how and what Ghanaians are taught about their past since their Western style education system has been structured after the...

This article suggests ways in which the artwork of the African people can be used to introduce certain geometric concepts to secondary school students. Some examples for the symmetry groups for onedimensional patterns in African artwork are presented. Further suggestions are provided on construction of the regular polygons that lead to some of the motifs found in African designs. Suggestions are made for the use of some design pieces to prove geometry theorems

For the first time in South Africa, a critical dialogue has been recorded between government policy-makers and academic researchers on the subject of education policy and practice. Implementing education policies attends to problems, politics and possibilities of implementing the policy goals of the first post-apartheid government established in 1994. The value of this book lies in several ‘insider accounts’ of the policy process, told through the voices of the legislators, politicians and...
