During the 1:200,000-scale mapping of northeastern Guinea, a suite of volcanic rocks comprising porphyritic lavas, pyroclastics and pyroclastic breccias, was identified in the Niani area in the northeast of the Siguiri Basin. The texture of the rocks, the abundance of pyroclastic deposits and the diversity of lapilli they contain all point to explosive eruptive mechanisms. A Pb–Pb zircon evaporation age of 2212±6 Ma obtained from a sample of rhyodacite has yielded the first evidence of early...

The task of Theatre in Education (TIE) performers is examined in relation to what I have witnessed in TIE programmes in South Africa, found in reports written by students and ideas proposed by theatre theorists. The four contextual frames, which John O'Toole maintains are at work in TIE (namely neighbourhood, venue, audience availability and the world of the play), provide a workable configuration through which to examine the effects of each of these on performance. The interaction between...

During the mandate period of British rule in Palestine, urban middle- and upper-class Arab women challenged the traditions that had secluded them from public life. The influence of missionary secondary education was the first and crucial step to the changing social roles of these women. Despite the general historical interpretation that Western missionary education merely modernized the domestic dimension of the indigenous women's identity, the Anglican mission schools in Palestine provided...

In the hippocampus, the CA1 region is selectively vulnerable to the effects of chronic prenatal ethanol exposure. In the guinea-pig, the number of CA1 pyramidal cells is decreased after chronic prenatal ethanol exposure. We tested the hypotheses that chronic prenatal ethanol exposure (through maternal ethanol ingestion) results in impairments in spatial learning and short- and long-term plasticity in the CA1 region of the postnatal guinea-pig hippocampus. Timed, pregnant guinea-pigs were...

The aim of the study was to evaluate the haematological effects of adding the antioxidant taurine to iron sulfate in the treatment of iron-deficiency anaemia (IDA). A sample of 730 students from Al-Azhar University, Gaza, in Palestine underwent screening with complete blood counts and serum samples. In subjects with microcytosis/hypochromasia, Alpha2 delta2 (HbA2) and serum concentrations of iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), ferritin and taurine were determined. Samples from 17...

In August and September, throughout south central Africa, seasonal clearing of dry vegetation and other fire‐related activities lead to intense smoke haze and ozone formation. The first ozone soundings in the heart of the southern African burning region were taken at Lusaka, Zambia (15.5S, 28E) in early September 2000. Maximum surface ozone was over 90 ppbv and column tropospheric ozone exceeded 50 DU. These values are higher than concurrent measurements over Nairobi (1S, 38E) and Irene...
