This study focuses on accounting education in the Syrian transition context and in the international context of globalization. It offers insights into accounting education and into the interrelationship in this respect between the accountancy profession and academia in this context. We elaborate an historical and contextual analysis of the Syrian context in relation to accounting education. We report on a series of interviews (conducted in 2002 and 2005) of professional accountants and...

Simulations of groundwater recharge in northeastern Uganda reproduce observed groundwater level fluctuations and provide estimates of recharge ranging from 140 mm·year -1 in Teso to 30 mm·year -1 in Karamoja. Simulations and available data strongly suggest that recharge occurs predominantly through indirect or localised mechanisms. If so, the impacts of higher air temperatures as a result of climate change may be more than offset by the projected increases in precipitation leading to a net...

This paper reports on an initiative to introduce, not the Philosophy for Children (P4C) programme itself, but its principles and some of its practices, into South African schools. Noise over-stimulation may induce hair cells loss and hearing deficit. The c-myc oncogene is a major regulator for cell proliferation, growth, and apoptosis. However, the role of this gene in the mammalian cochlea is still unclear. The study was designed to firstly investigate its function under noise condition, from the aspect of cochlear ultrastructural changes. We had established the adenoviral vector of c-myc gene and delivered the adenovirus suspension into the scala tympani of guinea...

Africa is most vulnerable to climate change, although it makes the least contribution to factors that result in global and regional climatic changes. High levels of vulnerability and low adaptive capacity across the continent have been linked to, among other things, poverty. This paper discusses and analyses the relationship between climate change and poverty in Africa. It investigates the relationship between climate change and poverty patterns in Africa, analyses the resultant impact, and...

This paper presents a collaborative educational experiment ‘The Death of the Dead Sea: A Problem Based Learning’ that was applied in two governmental high schools in Ramallah, Palestine in the school year 2006–2007. The students' role was to raise awareness to the phenomenon of the saltiest lake that shrinks towards extinction. In spite of the enormous challenges in Palestine, the project was achieved successfully. Students learned cooperatively to fully understand the problem, its causes,...
