SUMMARY The findings of a thirty month study into educational provision for children with severe mental handicaps in Bendel State, Nigeria, reveal that before suitable facilities are provided much work remains to be done to overcome the population's fear and ignorance of mental handicap and to demonstrate that people with mental handicaps can benefit from education and participate in community and family life.

A study of the pattern of cigarette smoking among 2317 students of both sexes attending some selected universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and schools of nursing in Nigeria was undertaken by means of questionnaires. Abstract Nigerian social studies teachers (n = 147) were surveyed to determine their conception of the role, context, and function of citizenship education in the primary school. Subjects represented all major regions, ethnic groups, and religions in Nigeria. Overall, the Nigerian teachers attitudes were somewhat conducive to citizenship education for life in a democratic society, but teachers also perceived limits upon such education.

The generation of convective storms over the escarpment of the northeastern region of South Africa is examined in terms of synoptic-, meso-, and local forcing. Severe storm days are defined and contrasted with no-storm days over a 5-year period. Storms are associated with midtropospheric troughs in the westerlies which interact with a major topographic boundary. From 16 urban and rural elementary schools in Kenya, 669 children in Grade 6 and their 77 teachers of mathematics were randomly selected for study of their attitudes about mathematics. No significant effects of sex or preferred area of study were noted, but urban and rural children were significantly different. Urban girls and rural boys were more positive in their attitudes. Rural male and female teachers differed significantly.
