SUMMARY Evidence for the presence of 11 intestinal parasites in pre-school children from 4 rural villages in Ghana was obtained from an examination of stool samples. Striking differences were detected between the prevalence of some of the 6 common infections in the 4 villages. This paper reports one study carried out among school children in Nigeria to investigate some of the social and behaviour factors contributing to the transmission of malaria, guineaworm, schistosomiasis and onchocerciasis. 270 women underwent laparoscopic tubal sterilizations with Yoon silicone rings at the Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic of the Dakar teaching hospital in Senegal between 1979-84. Nutritional surveys were conducted in three regions of Mauritania between September and November, 1983, to assess the impact of a severe drought and to determine priorities for relief assistance. Survey sites and children were chosen at random using established Centers for Disease Control survey methodology. Abstract The paper provides a qualitative account of a specific computer‐based education joint venture in South African adult education. Emphasis is placed on the socio‐economic and political background in South Africa. Some of the problems of adult learners are described and reasons given for using a computer‐based education solution. Some of the issues that arose in the implementation of the solution are dealt with. Details are given of the ways in which the project was funded with further observations on the project in action.

The data on blood culture isolates for 1983 and January - July 1984 reported by the Antibiotic Study Group of South Africa have been analysed to determine national and regional prevalences of different micro-organisms and resistance to certain antibiotics.
