Information on speech therapy services at ten Cerebral Palsy Schools in South Africa was obtained by means of a questionnaire. Missionary domination of African education is a dying phenomenon. Today's church-affiliated institutions in Africa, while still mindful of their proselytizing duties, subordinate their religious messages to the rigors of academic preparation. The realities of contemporary African nation-building preclude any other course. Just as increasing nationalistic impulses and socio-economic considerations during the 19th century forced European politicians to recognize that education of their youth...

It is well known that high concentrations of some heavy metals are toxic to green plants and that in excessive quantities they are poisonous and cause death to most living organisms (Antonovics, Bradshaw & Turner 1971; Lin Wu & Bradshaw 1972). Otto (1893) observed a reduction in growth rates of garden crops grown in nutrient solution derived from a copper still. Sommer (1931) found that root development was inhibited in some species at a concentration of copper of 0 25 mg I1-. Accumulated...

Two chromatographically and enzymatically distinct forms of acid phosphatase have been separated by gel filtration from an extract of guinea-pig epidermis. These enzymes, termed APase 1 and APase 2 , had pH optima for p -nitrophenyl phosphate hydrolysis around 5.0. APase 1 was inhibited by fluoride, L(+) tartrate, and lead nitrate, but was insensitive to formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde. In contrast, Apase 2 was insensitive to fluoride, L(+) tartrate, and lead nitrate, but was sensitive to...

THE widespread occurrence of pelagic tar and plastic wastes in parts of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans has been described previously1. Extensive and considerable fouling of the sandy beaches of Sierra Leone by tar lumps has now been observed at Lumley, Sussex, No. 2, Toke and Mamah villages (Fig. 1) during the past 14 months (June, 1973 to July, 1974). Large quantities of soft, brownish-black lumps (up to 7–8 cm diameter) have been repeatedly washed ashore along the entire stretch (about 6...
