Nigeria, a developing tropical country with an estimated population of sixty-one million, had her first institution of higher learning in 1934 when the Higher College was founded in Lagos. In the circumstances, the highest priority in education was to train a limited number of men and women in a limited sphere of professional education, i.e. medicine, engineering and commerce. As there was no department or institute of education in this institution, it could not be expected that Comparative...

Guinea pigs with large intramuscular tumors showed impaired delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity to specific antigens and decreased skin inflammatory reactivity to nonspecific agents. Induced peritoneal exudates from these animals contained fewer cells than those obtained from tumor-free animals. The number of peripheral blood leukocytes in tumor-bearing animals was normal or increased, and the turnover rates for monocytes and polymorphonuclear leukocytes were increased. However, in vitro,...

Library education has gone through a number of experiments. These have posed problems for librarianship in the country. Some of the problems raised by the postgraduate course are discrimination against other qualifications and whether the country really needs this level of qualification in large numbers. Abstract With the information explosion, it is more imperative than ever to seek continually for better organizational principles in teaching. Among many complementary and alternative schemata, the basic role of the concept as a teaching device should not be overlooked. By way of illustration, a simple physical model of a shatter belt, representing the concept of zonal resolution of stress, is shown to lend itself to five politico-economic transformations in Africa, each with a potential for...

The study of the basic patterns of plant structure does not required very complicated apparatus, except a microsopce. It is possible to discover much of the internal and external structure of plants with a shart blade and hand lens. Finding local examples frequently presents problems and so teachers ofthen have to fall back on prepared material in the form of stained sections of plats which are not grown in West Africa.

On November 1, 1970, an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 occurred 32 km north of Madang on the north coast of Papua New Guinea, and on the fringes of the Adelbert Range. Dense landsliding occurred over an area of 240 km2. Debris avalanches removed shallow soil and forest vegetation from slopes of 45°. Earthflows occurred on deeper soils and lower-angled slopes. The nature of the landslides and disposition of the vegetation debris suggest that falling trees triggered the landslides during the...

Botswana, a country of some 648,000 people unevenly distributed over more than 600,000 square kilometres, is an extremely poor nation whose estimated income per capita is less than $100 per annum. It is land-locked and dependent upon transport routes through neighbouring South Africa and Rhodesia. Frequent droughts cause major losses in Botswana's cattle herds, whose meat provides the country with its major export earnings. According to the 1964 census, almost 228,000 of the 250,000 workers...

Over 60 years ago, Kearney & Shantz (1911) suggested a grouping of plants of arid regions which is still useful: (1) drought escaping; (2) drought evading; and (3) drought enduring. They elaborated these categories as composed of: (1) those plants with a brief growth cycle; (2) those plants able to restrict water loss or with very extensive root systems serving for water uptake; and (3) those plants able to survive even when water uptake cannot take place. The last group includes many of the...

The examination procedure and the criteria employed were those described by WHO (1971). All children had periodontal disease, average PI ranging from 0.67 to 1.67, indicating simple gingivitis to early destructive periodontal disease. Calculus level, as...
