Mount Suswa is a low-lying Quaternary volcano in the Eastern Rift Valley of Kenya. It rises from the south-sloping floor of the Rift as an asymmetric, shield-shaped cone that covers an area of about 270 km2. The volcano consists of sodalite-bearing, phonolitic lava flows and subordinate proportions of pyroclastic rocks. Study of the Fantale volcano (8°58'N 39°54'E) and the surrounding region has shown that volcanism within this portion of the Main Ethiopian Rift is of two contrasting types. Intermediate and silicic lavas and pyroclasts are erupted from complex central volcanoes, while basalt lavas are extruded from tensional fissures cutting the intervening regions. Approximately 200 university sociology students in Ethiopia, in rating 90 selected occupations, placed governmental positions at or near the top with unskilled positions near the bottom. Authority and power were leading reasons for high placement. Comparative ratings of the same or similar Ethiopian and American occupations provided a high correlation coefficient.

Makerere University College is the oldest institution of higher education in East Africa. Situated in Kampala, Uganda, it lies not far from the northern shore of Lake Victoria, and draws its student population from those countries around the lake shores—Kenya and Tanzania, as well as Uganda itself. Eighty-five per cent of the enrolled students are of African origin, the remainder being Asians.

This study presents a cost-benefit approach to education that attempts to take into account a number of considerations left aside by previous studies. It concentrates on the income effects of education and provides a framework for an economic evaluation.
